    High School Mentoring Program

Chris Chambers kicked off the 2008 C.A.T.C.H. 84 Foundation/Hoover High School Mentoring Program by visiting this year’s participants at Hoover High School on Tuesday, September 16th. Hoover High School has selected eleven student athletes that are in need of additional motivation to make sure they continue to succeed on the field and in the classroom.
The students are required to have perfect attendance for classes and practice, maintain passing grades and display positive and non-aggressive behavior inside and outside of school. The students that meet these requirements will be rewarded with monthly trips hosted by Chris including trips to Chargers games.

The students will also be attending monthly life skills seminars, which will include a financial education component, a career workshop, an exercise/nutrition session and a college preparatory day, which will include a trip to the campus of San Diego State University.

While at the school, Chris also took time to speak with the Hoover High School football team in which he not only talked to the team but also answered all questions asked by the players.

Hoover HS SD State Visit (October)

Chris Chambers and the C.A.T.C.H. 84 Foundation hosted their monthly mentoring event as part of the Hoover High School Mentoring Program on Tuesday, October 14th on the campus of San Diego State University.
This month’s event featured a trip to the campus of San Diego State University. Each student was paired with a college student and had the opportunity to attend two classes along side their partner. After attending classes, the group came together and was provided an hour long tour of the campus by the Student Ambassadors. The tour featured a view of various departments, academic buildings, dormitories, athletic facilities and campus resources.

After attending classes and receiving the campus tour, the students were treated to lunch provided by C.A.T.C.H. 84 Foundation supporter, Subway. Before eating, the Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. James Kitchen, spent a few minutes talking to the group and welcomed them to the San Diego State University campus. In addition, Prospective Student Services presented relevant information regarding the admissions process, financial aid and scholarship options.

Once lunch started, the group was joined by Chris as he ate lunch with the students and participated in a round table discussion that included not only the Hoover High School students but the San Diego State students as well. The high school students talked about their experience during the day and the excitement of looking towards college. They asked several questions to the college students about topics such as college course work, balancing work and school, financial aid, scholarships and the importance of attending college.

The day was designed to show the Hoover High School students what life is like in college and how exciting college can be. The college students were extremely valuable as many of them were in the same situation as the high school students within the last few years. No matter what challenges they faced, they found a way to receive scholarships or financial aid, get their grades in order and make it to San Diego State University where they are pursuing their college degrees. It is the goal of the C.A.T.C.H. 84 Foundation that all of these high school students attend college and pursue their dreams. Hopefully, this experience will help motivate and educate them on how they can reach the next level.
