C.A.T.C.H. 84 Foundation Beford Stars Team Camp
The 4th Annual Bedford Stars Camp took place at Chris Chambers’ former high school, Bedford High School in Bedford, Ohio on June 21, 2008. The camp continues to gain popularity each year attracting over 200 participants from twelve Northeastern Ohio area high school varsity football teams. The purpose of the event is to teach young varsity players advanced offensive and defensive fundamentals of football, enhancing their athletic ability through instructional training drills and remedial practices, while offering them the opportunity to compete against each other in a seven on seven tournament.
The heart of the camp consisted of learning advanced techniques and skills for immediate application. The participating NFL athletes along with the participating high school varsity coaches provided instruction on both the physical and mental aspects of the game within designated station areas. Participating NFL players included Chargers TE Antonio Gates, Chargers LB Matt Wilhelm, WR Koren Robinson, Buffalo Bills S Donte Whitner and former Titans DB Mike Echols.
The camp consisted of a morning and an afternoon session. The morning session consisted of six agility stations and individual instruction from the players and coaches. The station areas included: blocking, ball carrying, passing/receiving, quarterback skills, agility drills, two and three point stance, secondary technique and coverages. After the morning session, the athletes broke for lunch.
At lunch time, the athletes were not only treated to lunch provided by the C.A.T.C.H. 84 Foundation but they also received the most important lesson of the day, courtesy of camp sponsor, Key Bank. Key Bank talked to the students about the importance of financial responsibility. Points covered included important facts about opening a credit card, the importance of opening up a bank account and available financial aid options in respects to college tuition. At the end of the presentation, Key Bank and C.A.T.C.H. 84 awarded a $2,500 scholarship to a high school senior. The student not only excelled at school but volunteered much of her time outside of school to younger people in her community.
After lunch and the financial education seminar, the players started the afternoon session, which consisted of a seven on seven team passing competition with awards given to the top two high school teams in the competition, who battled it out in the Bedford Stars Team Camp Championship Game.
This year’s winning team was from the Raw Talent Sports Academy in Cleveland, which is a training center for athletes who have recently graduated from high school. The runner up was the camp’s host site, Bedford High School. In addition, a group of players were selected by the coaches as the players of the day at their respective positions.
Each varsity player received a souvenir bag, access to NFL talent autographs and photos after the camp to commemorate their experience.
C.A.T.C.H. 84 Youth Skills Camp
The 5th Annual C.A.T.C.H. 84 Youth Skills Camp took place in Cleveland on June 20, 2008 at the Collinwood Athletic Complex.
Over 150 kids, ages 9 to 14 years old participated in the day long event, which featured instruction from NFL players, former college football players, a local semi pro team (Ohio Invaders) and local high school varsity coaches. In addition, all of the participants received free lunch, beverages and a bag of items that included a t-shirt, shorts, a headband and other items donated by camp sponsors including Reebok, STACK Magazine and Key Bank.
The main objective of the camp was to enhance the youth football skills of all participants through instructional training drills and remedial practices. Chris Chambers directed the clinic with assistance from the other players and coaches in attendance. The heart of the clinic consisted of teaching techniques and skills for immediate application including both offensive and defensive fundamentals. The drills emphasized both individual and collective non-contact instructional drills.
At the end of the camp, all of the kids got to compete in various challenges including the 40 yard dash, a throwing competition and a wide receiver obstacle course. At the end of the camp, all participants received a group photo and had the chance to receive autographs from the instructors and have lunch, which was provided by the C.A.T.C.H. 84 Foundation. In addition, a few players received awards for their exceptional work throughout the camp and for winning the various post camp contests.
